6x6: a travesty I know...

...but in the middle of prepping twenty-odd figures to paint for a mate (by April!) I thought I'd attempt a little surgical work on the second 6x6. Generally very well received (both PJ and model) on the various forums I frequent, there where one or two comments regarding the size and positioning of the exhaust and whether it was feasible to remove it. Well....
...it is

the cut hasn't been cleaned-up yet and you don't need to throw the exhaust in the bits box as it fits nicely on the bottom of the hull either this way

or the way I'll have it (aligns nicely to fit with the holes where the piping was removed and where the new piping will emerge from); it doesn't protrude much further than the axles although the angle i've taken the pic from would seem to suggest it does

still looks ok in profile

and the 'damage' can be hidden with stowage

As you can see I've started to make a stowage rack but when ordering another 6x6 to replace the one I'm 'butchering' I discovered these etched-brass panniers so I've ordered a couple and will wait 'til they arrive before continuing.

...applied to the lower hull and the tyres given their base coat and a very subtle drybrush with a slightly lighter shade.

I've also started fading and staining selective areas of the paintwork on the upper hull with Mig filters. it is just about visible on the reinforced armour on the front of the hull...

...and on the rear, upper-hull hatch although I've also blended blue and grey filters on the sides around the vehicle numbers.

...starting with the turret. I've lined (with a very diluted black oil paint wash) and edged/highlighted (with lighter grey acrylics) all that wonderful detail on the turret. The black oil wash has been allowed to 'seep' away from the detail to stain the original base grey. I've not started the hull before photographing so you can see the difference. Jeremy wants his to remain monochrome grey so I'll use several different oil and enamel (Mig) filters to alter the tone of the varying surfaces very subtley before weathering. I might also paint the NBC air scrubber and the Schnorkel tube case different colours to the grey.

The shelves...

...and the workspace. Having a chat the other day about the 'plastic pile' (and in my case the 'metal pile') and how much of it will be built/painted. I thought I'd post some pics of what's on the shelves (plastic) and show you my workspace at the same time. This could get a bit boring after the first couple of pics so I'll insert a jump break and you can 'read more' if you wish....
As the last post was the WIP 1/20 Falke I thought I'd start with my selection of Ma.K models waiting to be built

The Falke box on the left doesn't contain a Falke (that's on the 'table') but it's not empty - it's full of half- built 'suits'! There's a couple of rare, resin Japan only kits (GroberHund - now released in plastic by Hasegawa) and a 1/35 Ferkel (space-based) both of these procured for me by my buddy and superb Ma.K modeller, Linc, who works and lives in Japan. The Jeep you see is not a Ma.K model but is 1/20 in scale and is destined to be Sasha's ride sometime in the distant future!
On the shelf to the right are my 1/35 models - modern and sci-fi - including a few of the pre-painted Hobbyboss 1/35 Ma.K suits and a couple of Gradiators (sic).

to the right of this shelving the very few 40K kits I have, a few 1/48 Tamiya kits (for spare parts), three really nice, very detailed 1/72 Patlabor kits (now discontinued), a couple of 1/20 Scopedog suits tucked right in the corner and lots of boxes with 'bits' in.

Final set of shelves has lots of wooden, Ikea drawer sets and boxes containing various and varied sci-fi figures and vehicles, a nice set of two, 1/10 multipose (choice of legs and arms) Star Wars Stormtroopers (which, I believe, are also discontinued), A Moon Bus and a 1/24 Patlabor Patrol Car.

Here's the one and only display cabinet - I need to invest in a couple more
- and my old, fine-art painting apron (I wasn't as careful where the paint went then)

the drawers above contain more 28mm figures and vehicles, my oil paint selection, spare scalpel blades and the few GW paints I still have.
To the right is my painting area with the most used paint colours in the rack on the table

in the middle is the 'tool' area with the magnifying head-set my wife bought me years ago - should this 'break' I'd be devastated ( I have spare ones but this is the best set I've ever had and can't seem to find more anywhere!) so If you see a set anywhere (it has two sets of lenses, one behind the other giving you an option of 2 or 4 times magnification) let me know.

very nice! I picked up three Secret Weapon 6x6 Rapid Assualt Vehicles from the post office this morning (yep, customs got me - £21, could have had another one!) two for myself and one to paint for Jeremy. Let me say right away - I love it! Great design with lots of detail, several main weapon options and even a choice of two anti-personnel weapons to mount on the hull. Fit of parts is excellent and particularly well designed in terms of aligning parts. The main hull is cast in resin with the armanent cast in metal. As with any resin casting there are issues but I consider them very minor and should not present difficulties to anyone with a modicum of experience of working with resin. On to the photos.....
parts: you may have seen the parts and options on the Secret Weapon site but here they are anyway.

The lower and upper hull parts have locating pins and holes

and the fit is almost perfect even without cleaning the edges (i'm just holding the hull parts loosely)

this join is covered by the wheel unit - very clever idea this to cast the wheels already mounted to the side and to glue the whole side to the hull. Again I'm holding everything very loosely and haven't cleaned-up any of the joining edges

all of the weapon options fit well and could, I think, be attached with magnets to ring the changes. The two hull weapons just slot in the rectangular hole in the hull with very little preparation.
Detail on the turret and hull is excellent

and here's one I prepared earlier (five minute to put together after about 30 mins of cleaning and prep). There are a couple of casting blocks to be removed the largest (and this is small really) and most awkward of which is on the hull front where it's difficult to get the appropriate tools in the space. I shaved it off with a new scalpel blade very carefully (didn't make a great job of it and will need to replace a little detail and maybe add some cast metal texture).

You may have noticed a little mould slippage here and there - again, like casting blocks, pretty easy to deal with apart from one of the tyres which was badly flawed (and this after little trimming of the excess resin)

To be fair to SW it was the only one out of the 18 wheels that needed more than a little attention!
If I do have a concern it is with the packaging. I received two boxes - one with my two and one with Jeremy's single vehicle. Boxes were fine and sturdy but when I opened them I was somewhat surprised to find only a wad of brown paper on the top of the loose contents for protection and as a consequence one of my wheel units was broken. Happily it was a very clean break and will be easily repaired

This is a great little (not so little) model that will fit with any miniatures in my (or your) collection. Detail, as I said earlier, is first rate, building is simple because of the excellent planning by SW and casting is very good (the lines from the 3D print are evident - and I haven't experienced that with Jed's vehicles - but I expect the painting process will hide them) with very few defects.
I'll do some size comparison photos with several figures and vehicles and post them later in the week. It does seem an ideal vehicle to match with Defiance Games Marines which are due to be released very shortly and I'll match them up when mine arrive.
Oh, one more thing, personally I'd like to see more open hatches for figures.....

...I'm also working on. First is the Micropanzer 'Amakudari Strider', a nice companion for the Russian Heavy Combat Armour a couple of posts below. The Strider is a kit of several parts and it's advisable to drill and pin to secure joins. I did over a dozen, by hand with a pin vice - fingers are still sore! I think this is one of most aesthetcally pleasing 'mechs' I've seen in any scale. I'm planning a little diorama on this base - another of Ian's (Fenris Games) 'Ark' bases - a couple of figures and some crates/boxes. At the moment I've only painted the base camo.

The second vehicle (yes, another Warthog) is an experiment in creating digital camo using dot matrix pre-cut masking tape. It's a great product - adheres very well, very little damage to the underlying paintwork when peeled off and no seepage! Bugger to apply and keep it all at right-angles though. I got mine from Japan and I'm not aware that it's available elswhere although Jed is hoping to stock it sometime in the near future. As I say, very much an experiment.....

...some time ago I pre-ordered Micropanzer's Russian Heavy Combat Armour but until very recently it looked as if the difficulties Jason was having getting 3d prints of the quality he desired meant that they were unlikely to make it to production. Well they're up for order and well worth aquiring. Full build and review when the arrive. I also have one of his 28mm Amakudari Striders so will build and review that at the same time.

WIP: weathering vehicles 4...

...filters. Bearing in mind that my photography leaves a little to be desired you will probabley see little difference between this stage and the last but even in reality the changes are very subtle. I've added an overall filter (stains the underlying colours) from Sin Industries - Tan for Tritonal Camo - then applied the Archer dry-transfer decals (generic Soviet stars and numbers as this is a Novoya-Rus vehicle and the camo is based on contemporary Russian camo) and applied a second coat of the filter. The filter brings the three, disparate colours closer in hue and makes the camo scheme more cohesive. Using a tan filter warms and fades the Green and Dk.Grey and gives the whole scheme a slightly dusty look. Filters should be applied sparingly - don't oveload the brush - and act as a stain. Too much liquid will act as a wash and the tan will settle into and around detail (not too bad with tan as it looks like dust - see the raised sensors on the roof) and negate the dark lining done in the first stages. Below is the vehicle at this latest stage compared to stage three....

...a little, very subtle drybrushing. I've added a little Vallejo Stone Grey to the green and dk.grey base colours and with a very dry brush (virtually all the paint wiped off on a piece of kitchen roll) applied this to each of the panels - concentrating on the centres of the larger ones - and the horizontal surfaces in a circular, scrubbing motion. Filters next...

I'll be purchasing and painting a few of these when they come out later in the year so I thought I'd thin the stash of the old ones. This will be number four (I do have a soft spot for these) and I've started by adding a chassis of sorts inspired by a version built and painted by Squeek - thanks for the inspiration but the front turned wheels were a conversion to far for me!

not a great deal will be seen once the model is sitting on it's wheels but at least I know it's there!

I don't know if my photographic skills are good enough for you to see the difference in the pics below and those posted a couple of days ago but.....
I've lined each panel with very diluted black oil paint - tinted thinners really. If you get the mix right the solution should flow along panel lines and into recesses through capillary action creating a 'shadow' effect and staining the underlying paint a little darker than the raised panels. I've repeated this stage several times to achieve the depth of colour I want. I've then highlighted the top and side edges of all the panels and the edges of the vehicle with lighter tones of the base colours. Somewhat ironically both processes are designed to 'pop-out' detail that becomes obscured by the camoulflage. the main gun barrel and the anti-personnel weapons have been base-coated.

Had a bit of a disaster too - dropped the bloody thing on it's nose and broke the two front angled pieces off; the left side, lights and main gun also fell off. managed a reasonable repair and tomorrow will do a little dry-brushing (yes, I know it's not in vogue but it still has it uses), a little 'Zenithal' lighting and add the first of the filters.

I'm quite often asked, on the forums I frequent, how I achieved a particular weathering effect on vehicles - the honest answer is I 'borrowed' it from other modellers whose build and paint articles appear in the pages of military modelling magazines dedicated to 1/35 historical armour (you might also like to check out Bryan Krueger's work on Ma.K models over several scales) There are far to many of these doyens of the craft - or art - to mention but I use my own interpretation of their techniques (in many cases their specialites) to weather my sci-fi vehicles. For those of you unfamiliar with these techniques I will record my efforts on the several vehicles I will be painting over the next few months. First up is Antenociti's Novaya-Rus Skorpion Lt. Grav tank in a camo scheme derived from contemporary Russion camo.
The basic camo was applied with an airbrush (generic Tamiya colours, black, dk. green and buff); masked with blu-tak to create a hard edge. The three colours were then overpainted by brush with Vallejo and Lifecolor paints - Lifecolour Tyre Black (in reality a very dk.grey), Vallejo Russian Green and Stone Grey. I overpaint by brush to keep a consistency of colour when starting the weathering effects which begin with 'lining' and edging. The main gun (barrel) and anti-personal weapons have not been painted in their base colours as yet.

...2012. First up is Jeremy's last adventurer which I hope to finish this week/next week

and then five more of his Elysian/Cadian conversions.
I 've also been asked to paint another 1/20 'Sasha' (for Neil) and she is now ready for priming. The first Sasha was a 3D print this latest Sasha is a resin casting in kit form which needed a little work (a little filling here and there and the use of a hairdryer to aid fit of one or two parts - left arm/hand to goggles benefited greatly from the elasticity of resin when subjected to a safe ie not a naked flame; hot water or the aforementioned hairdryer are ideal heat source) during the building process.

For some reason the resin casting is slightly bigger than the 3D print. Something to do with the creation of the mould maybe?
I have a complete set of T-Pea troopers to paint for a friend - no's 2-5 are on the table (you may have seen no.1 in an earlier post)

There are two Fenris 120mm Ark bases on the table which I'll photograph tomorrow.
Christmas week is never a great time for painting - I never get a decent, uninterrupted period of time but I have managed to grab a few hours here and there for building and preparing a few 'vehicles'...eg Forgeworld's resin Elysian 'Taurus' vehicles which I've had for quite some time but initially had difficulty fitting the axles...

thinking of painting them in this scheme...

I also have these two, very nice Tractor Muls from the Infinity range which I received just before Christmas...

What ever happened to DLD productions I wonder. I always thought I might buy a few of the range but never got around to it before they ceased trading. Managed to pick this and a couple of other items up from ebay a while back. Great little kit with lots of detail and, but for a few minor flaws, cast excellently. Scale-wise I think it's nearer 25 than 28mm (figures included for the driver's and commander's hatches have helmets cast from Denizen Federation troopers which I still have loads of) so would seem ideal for Denizen, GZG and possibley Hasslefree 'troopers' (of which there may soon be a few more). The Grymn seem ok too.

...I've been asked if I'd be interested in painting miniatures from the new range by Defiance Games - they look fantastic so, of course, I replied "yes". The first to be released are the USMC closely followed by the Bundeswehr. Full review and WIP when I receive them.

Although they'll be sending me minis to paint I've also ordered two sets of the Marines for my own collection. Lots of conversion potential - 24 figures; seperate heads (3 variations I think); choice of weapons; and all in hard plastic!

Here's the original concept...

"We’ve purchased the rights to producer the Viper Scout Car in 28mm and 15mm sizes.

This vehicle may be known to some of you from various online graphics forums and games and is a great little 2-man dune-buggy type vehicle with a great design that allows it to have open or closed cockpit.
As such we’ve been able to produce the 28mm model of this with a detailed interior and armoured hatches that can be hinged and with detailed metal suspension, bull-bars, steering wheel, drive shaft and so forth.
The 15mm model will be less modular and with less detailed/separate suspensions etc. It will come in two versions: one open-top and one with closed doors. Prices TBD but with around a dozen metal parts on the 28mm model it is likely to be around the same price as the Bear 4×4."

no, her welding equipment! Started painting and 'aging' the trolley with a little rust and grime...

...the wheels aren't the originals - I managed to shatter the spokes when fitting a new, brass rod axle thinking it would be more robust Sorry Rob. I've painted the replacement wheels a different colour to the trolley to emphasise the exchange.

Sorry, still can't respond to comments! The trooper is a conversion (head-swap) of the initial resin figure. the material is very easy and forgiving to work with so removing the oxygen mask and piping and cleaning up afterwards wasn't too problematical. The head is from Hasslefree and has a greenstuff cap.

...System Troopers. This one is the first of five - I've swapped the helmets for one of the variants available and made new necks to give a greate range of positioning options...I may have to change the colour of the holster and packs as the colours are a little too close - black leather I think!

Had these lovely little troopers sitting in a drawer for some time and then saw several of them painted recently by Duff - and very nice they were too! So nice I had to dig mine out and have a go...
I've added cargo pockets to break up the camo pattern around the legs and tried to make the helmet appear to have a cover. Still a little work required on the visor and armour plates.
